त्रासदी

It's a dusky evening at Patna Junction.
I met a boy from a very small town in Jalpaiguri, around 17 years old. He was coming from Gaya, Bihar, after doing pind daan for his father. I just asked what happened to him, and he said, “He did suicide.”

I felt numb, I didn’t know how to react.
I just smiled awkwardly and said, “Sorry, bhai.”
He replied, “areeh bhaiya It’s life,. Thik hai na, aap sorry kyun bol rhe ho. Kaun hamesha sath rehta hai.”

From the side, his grandfather said, “Beta guzar gaya, pota hai wohi kaafi hai humare liye.”

I asked him about his dream. He said, “I love to play cricket, and I wanted to become a cricketer. Mujhe desh ke liye khelna hai, par bhaiya zimmedari hai ab.”
Honestly, I didn’t have any words to say. I felt so helpless.

He just said while looking outside, “Topi kharidunga ek, takla accha nahi dikhta.”
I smiled and said, Let’s go outside. I bought him a cap, and we had dinner.

I don’t want to show myself as good - trust me, I’m not. I never liked showing empathy, I think it’s my escape mechanism.

I just wish he gets everything in life.
